The production of homozygous wheat is time and labor intensive, but is a very critical step in wheat research and breeding. Doubled haploid technology can cut this time down to 2 breeding cycles; reducing the time required for varietal development from 10 to 12 years to 6-7 years.
Doubled haploids are developed via wheat by maize crosses through:
- haploid induction by pollinating wheat with corn pollen
- haploid embryo rescue and tissue culture
- doubling with colchicine to produce fertile homozygous plantlets
- subsequent seed set
Or through microspore culture:
- isolation, pretreatment and induction of microspores to form haploid embryos
- in vitro embryo regeneration
- doubling with colchicine to produce fertile homozygous plantlets
- subsequent seed set
Wheat Doubled Haploid Facility is housed in Johnson Hall, room 302 and is operated by WSU Department of Crop and Soil Sciences. We provide service to WSU scientists and are open to other breeders and researchers.
