Jones 2008 Mentor of the Year

Stephen JonesWinter wheat breeder and crop science professor Stephen Jones received the 2008 Mentor of the Year – Research Faculty Award, in conjunction with the 13th Annual Women’s Leadership Conference at Washington State University.  This award is one of five made annually that recognize individuals who have filled the special role of mentor in their academic and/or professional careers.  He was presented the award at the Forum’s award ceremony on April 2, 2008.

Jones was nominated by five members of his winter wheat breeding program.  “It is my strong belief that his dedication and loyalty to the people in his group are key to the phenomenal success achieved through his science and teaching” writes scientific assistant Kerry Balow.  “He genuinely values people, and adds value to people while working with them.  He believes in his students and staff.  He believes that we will succeed, and helps us succeed” writes doctoral student Janet Matanguihan.  “This for me has the greatest impact on my development as a student, a teacher, a scientist, and a future leader.”

Other nominators were research technician supervisor Meg Gollnick, postdoctoral research associate Lori Hoagland, and doctoral student Julie Dawson.
