Research

Focus is on barley breeding and genetics.  Barley breeding objectives include improvement of yield and other agronomic traits, disease (barley stripe rust, soil borne) and insect (Russian wheat aphid, Hessian fly) resistance, and malting and nutritional quality of primarily spring types. Pedigree-bulk, backcross, and molecular breeding techniques are used. Collaboration on the U.S. Barley Genome Project has occurred through QTL analysis, verification, fine mapping, and molecular marker assisted selection of quality and agronomic traits. The study of management schemes in relationship to barley genetics and genotype response in production and quality has had a focus on direct seeding technology. Read more.
