Research

The objectives of this program are twofold. The first is the short-term development of new cultivars meeting immediate brewery needs for high-yield hops imparting desirable aroma and bitterness to beer. The second is the long-term development of cultivars showing improved resistance to hop pests and diseases such as hop aphid and hop downy mildew and hop powdery mildew.  We use RFLP and RAPD techniques to detect differences between hop genotypes and to tag genes for economically important traits.
