Dr. Peggy Chevalier, crop physiologist, retired May 15, 2004 from Washington State University after 26 years of service. She currently holds an emeritus appointment with the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences.

Chevalier received a B.S. (1971) degree in Biology from University of Illinois, Urbana. She then taught biology in the Peace Corps in Malaysia from 1971-1973. She received an M.S. (1976) degree in Agronomy and dual Ph.D. degrees (1978) in Agronomy and Plant Breeding, all from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.  She began her career at Washington State University in 1978, retiring at the rank of associate professor. She was a visiting scientist at CSIRO in Canberra, Australia during 1987.

She was a member of the American Society of Agronomy, the Crop Science Society of America, the American Society of Plant Physiologists, the American Society for the Advancement of Science, and Sigma Xi. She is a past chair of Division C-2 in the Crop Science Society of America, was president of the Association for Faculty Women at WSU, and served as a legislative representative for the WSU Faculty Senate. Her research focused on drought tolerance in cereals and dryland cropping systems.

Chevalier influenced many undergraduate and graduate students, through advising and instruction. She served as the graduate student coordinator for a number of years. She taught undergraduate courses in crop/environment interactions and crop growth and development, and graduate courses in crop physiology. Known for her high standards, students were challenged by her courses. According to students, she was tough but fair.

In retirement, she plans to spend more time hiking, bird watching, and pursuing numerous hobbies.
