NSPIRE IGERT Graduate Fellowship Program

WSU will receive $6 million over five years from NSF’s flagship Integrative Graduate Education and Research Training (IGERT) interdisciplinary program to fund approximately 60 new doctoral students across three program areas.

Of particular interest is the NSPIRE (Nitrogen Systems:  Policy-oriented Integrated Research and Education) IGERT program at Washington State University.  The Department of Crop and Soil Sciences is an active participant in the program directed by the interdisciplinary Center for Environmental Research and Education Outreach (CEREO) at Washington State University.

The NSPIRE IGERT program is a multidisciplinary student doctoral training program designed to create a new generation of scientists with broad and rigorous training in nitrogen cycling who seamlessly integrate nitrogen cycle science for effective communication with public policy makers.  Nitrogen-cycle management is listed as one of the most critical 21st century “grand challenges” by the National Academy of Engineering.

Fellowship recipients will receive full graduate student support including two years of NSPIRE support with a $30,000/year stipend.  Other benefits include unique training in policy studies, participating in a semester-long studio course that will immerse them in policy and communication issues.  Students also will do in internships in policy organizations, such as the International Nitrogen Initiative or the World Meteorological Organization.

In 2009, two Soil Science graduate students have received NSPIRE IGERT fellowships, while a number of CSS faculty are lecturing for the program with several more CSS students taking advantage of the course work..
