~ What would be the consideration of each product (Stinger, Basagran, and Butyrac) for addressing this problem?

Stinger could be used to control common groundsel in the mint and reduce the seed bank density of the common groundsel. However, alfalfa couldn’t be planted within 12 months of a Stinger application and potatoes within 18 months. The most practical application would be to use Stinger in the last production year of the mint followed by a wheat crop prior to rotating to alfalfa.Basagran is labeled for use in mint for common groundsel control, but is only effective on common groundsel smaller than 3 inches in height. However, there are no rotational restrictions. Bonus if they get this and mention that labeled rates of Basagran may cause mint injury.Butyrac is labeled for use in seedling and established alfalfa, but common groundsel is not listed on the label. Bonus points if they mention that seedling alfalfa hay may not be harvested for 60 days after a Butyrac application, 30 days for established alfalfa.

~What do you recommend the cattleman do with the remaining hay?

Most correct answer is destroy, some points if they mentioned blending with clean hay, zero points if they say it’s fine to feed it.

~How do you manage the problem in the second-year alfalfa field?

Inspect the field, chances are nothing will need to be done. Buctril may be applied to alfalfa if there is a problem.

~What can be done to prevent the problem in the future?

Rotate to winter wheat prior to planting alfalfa. Remove mint stand before common groundsel infestation becomes severe. Use Stinger (clopyralid) to control common groundsel in mint. Inspect standing hay for potentially toxic weeds.
